OOOOHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

So Topps Series 2 is going to hit the shelves today. I didn't realize it until recently but Luis Torrens is in Series 2. Yes, you heard me. LUIS ALFONSO SAEZ TORRENS IS IN 2018 TOPPS SERIES 2! Of all of the things that I was not prepared to write this year, that is very much at the top. Topps really delivered on their Torrens card this year.

OOOOHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!
Look at that magnificent shot!

Big props to Topps man. They must've read my scathing review of their 2017 Topps Update card of Torrens. Because THIS is... *loses breath*. I mean, THIS. IS. FANTASTIC. I love it. It's a beautiful action shot with Torrens in catching gear right before a play at the plate about to deny a run attempt from non-other than last year's third place AL MVP finalist. 10/10. A+++! I can't wait to get some of these for real in my hand.

As fantastic as that card is though, I'm torn. On one hand more Torrens cards is always great. On the other hand, more Torrens parallels is always bad. The thought of having to go after like five more of those 5x7 things scares me and makes me want to just give up collecting forever. GAH! Although I won't lie, I can't not go after cards with that picture.

Look at it again

Plus now that Shohei Ohtani is on the shelf there's less incentive for people to chase his cards and by extension, bother opening this product (which was low in the first place because the big ticket chasers never care about flagship). You know that Topps printed Series 2 more than the treasury printed money this year, so good luck to any poor soul trying to track down parallels (that includes me FYI). BTW, if you pull a Torrens, you know where to find me. Even if you need that card for your PATP collection or whatever, just know that any Torrens card you get is legally mine and that you are obligated to send it to me ;).

I would sign up for Group Breaks but Torrens doesn't have any hits or autos, even if he did I'd probably just get Gavin'd anyway and just end up with a fat stack of base cards so I'll pass. Actually, that's a sick ass card. I might just sign up for one lmao. Can't hurt to try?

This is a great card

Also we're now at the point in the season where Minor League Team issues for the full season teams are coming out. What that means is that the Lake Elsinore Storm team set is on the horizon, and with it the only Torrens card I was actually expecting. A card of Torrens as a Storm. Hope it's as good as the Topps flagship card.

Torrens has your number cupcake

Let the chase begin!

As always thanks for stopping by and take care :).

  1. It's a great card and photo choice! Ramirez is definitely out, right? Give us the back story!

  2. "I'd probably just get Gavin'd anyway" had me laughing out loud! That is a beautiful action shot.

I did a little research and found this play is from July 5th of last season. The Padres won 6-2 and Luis went 1-3 at the plate.
Ramirez started the 8th inning with a double and was still at second after two outs when Yan Gomes came to bat. Gomes hit a line drive to RCF where Hunter Renfroe fielded it and fired it home, which ended the inning. I didn't look for any video, but here's an address to the box score and play-by-play: https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/CLE/CLE201707050.shtml

  4. It's the same photo I used for the Sega custom, kinda making that fake card obsolete now, though it definitely looks better as a horizontal card when you can see the runner barreling down like that. Kudos to whomever at Topps picked that photo to use.

    1. Nonsense, if anything I think seeing your custom made Topps panic and make their own card with the same picture. Besides, anything with the SCG motif is still infinitely cool in my book. So your card is not obsolete.

  5. Unfortunately Lake Elsinore hasn't had a team set since 2015 - who knows if they'll make one for this year - but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for a set.

  6. Awesome action shot. Did a little homework for you... and found this on Getty Images:

San Diego Padres catcher Luis Torrens (21) waits to tag out Cleveland Indians third baseman Jose Ramirez (11) during the eighth inning of the Major League Baseball Interleague game between the San Diego Padres and Cleveland Indians on July 5, 2017, at Progressive Field in Cleveland, OH. San Diego defeated Cleveland 6-2.
